How will you staff this hospital if there is a shortage of medical personnel in Northern Ghana?
NEA has been providing young students with scholarships for secondary and tertiary education for years. When a Ghanaian student graduates from a tertiary program, the student is required to provide one to four years of paid service to their supporting organization. A large number of NEA-supported students have been pursuing medical-related fields, and will be ready to join the hospital when it is finished. We expect that, as with NEA, many of these professionals will choose to stay with the hospital once their initial term of service is completed.
Where will the funds come from to operate this hospital once it is built?
The Leyaata Hospital will be integrated into the Ghanaian health system. Salaries of all health professionals will be paid for by the Ghanaian government. Most treatment expenses are recovered by a National Health Insurance Program. In addition, the hospital will generate revenue through diagnostic testing, mortuary services, related accommodation / food services and other entrepreneurial revenue generators. We expect that the hospital will be financially sustainable within four years.
Who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the hospital?
GRID and NEA have established a Leyaata Hospital board, in which NEA will have a continued presence. A Hospital CEO has already been identified: a Ghanaian who was supported by GRID and NEA to complete a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration. The hospital will be part of the Christian Health Association of Ghana, a formal association of hospitals that receives public funding for health care delivery.
GRID and NEA have a lot of other ongoing projects. Will a large project like the hospital adversely affect those?
We are continuing to implement significant poverty alleviation projects in the area. In fact, the Canadian Government has just approved funding for a multi-year project that will help release women from poverty.
